Who we are
Brighton & Hove Music for Connection (BHMC) is Brighton & Hove’s specialist community music service for adults of all abilities to play together, for social inclusion and wellbeing.
Since 2013 we have offered participatory music as a tool for engagement in a variety of community-based settings, including with older people, people living with dementia and carers, for mental health, community building, and staff wellbeing.
We are funded through ongoing contracts and grants: Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC), NHS Brighton & Hove CCG, National Lottery, as well as individuals and organisations throughout the city and beyond.
What we do
BHMC offers a service that we know from experience is beneficial to many different people, not just one group. Our sessions are tailored to the requirements and wishes of the individuals attending, though our underlying approach and method is the same: offering music-making to connect in a person-centred way, responding in the moment to what participants offer (while keeping to a safe and structured setting), and reflecting in order to develop the work.
While our current ongoing work is primarily with the groups mentioned above, we have the flexibility to work with adults of any age and background. Through our work we have become embedded within the local community with established and developing partnerships, as well as having regional and national links.
We have redesigned much of our work during 2020 in order to be able to continue connecting with others, delivering to the highest safety standards while creating meaningful interactions: physically-distanced sessions outdoors, online workshops, and phone sessions.Brighton & Hove Music for Connection
